From Wobbly to Rock-Solid: A Basketball Backstops Renovation Story

Basketball backboard support refers to the whole system of supports used to fix the backboard and hoop firmly in position at the top of the whole court.

The Story of a Gym Renovation

A community center has recently renovated its main gym facility that has been in use for many years in a row by various league and school teams. The basketball backstops installed there had clearly become bent over at the mounts due to prolonged exposure to vibrations from playing ball games. The renovators were left with no other option but to either fix them somehow or replace them completely, and they chose the latter option.

What the Renovation Revealed

Modern basketball backboards were firm and sturdy even with heavy dunking practice sessions whereas this was no longer possible with the older and aged system anymore. Backboards endure immense stress during their lifetimes, and many of the people operating the facilities have little idea of this stress until a problem is detected during regular checks. The wobbly or bent backboard is not only a question of performance but is a safety hazard for anyone playing around the hoop as well.

Types Available for Your Space

Ceiling mounted backstops are ideal for gyms with sufficient ceiling construction already provided in the building. Wall mounted backstops can be installed in gymnasiums where there is less clearance under the ceiling for installing any equipment.

Portable backstops provide additional convenience when the court needs to be used for other activities by the community members. Managers searching for sport equipment on the internet should consider the backstop as a structural option.

Budgeting for a Full Structural Inspection

Prior to purchasing new backstops, structural engineers will be hired by many places to make sure the walls and/or ceilings will be able to hold up under the extra weight and pressure that the new installation will require.

If this is not done to save money in the beginning, then there could be much bigger problems when the project needs to be redone due to faulty mounting points.
